Vacation 2011 S

Pomona - Pasadena - Calif. Inst of Technology - Los Angeles - California

Thursday 28 July 2011

We left the Coarsgold, CA campground and headed S. on Hwy 41 then at Fresno took Hwy 99
through Tulare, Delano and Bakersfield and later merged with IH 5 and over the Tejon Pass to the Los Angeles area.

- -
South on Hwy 41 - - Almond trees to the horizon on Hwy 99.

Those pipes you see going up into the mountains are a huge aquaduct
delivering water up and through the mountains to the Los Angeles area.

approaching Tejon Pass on IH 5

Tejon Pass on IH 5 just north of the Los Angeles area.
There are several pull-outs with water available for overheated vehicles
This pass is a grueling test for tow vehicles.

After getting over the Pass we headed East on IH 210 through Pasadena to Pomona.

Camping at the Fairpark KOA in Pomona, California
This is the closest KOA campground to the California Institute of Technology.

We made a practice run to Cal Tech in Pasadena to locate it, the parking lot, and get an idea of travel time.
There was a big accident on IH 210 which slowed us to a crawl for a while.
We took a different way back, not on the expressway and also stopped by a grocery for supplies.
It was well after dark when we got back to camp.

Ricketts House

Cannon from the Franco-Prussian war
on the brass plaque - No.42 Model of 1896 Rock Island Arsenal 1900 G.W.B.
We were told that this cannon was borrowed by M.I.T. and students from Cal Tech then flew to M.I.T and borrowed it back.
There is a healty competition between the great Technology schools from the East and West of USA.

We had lunch at the Chandler Cafeteria (cash only) and tried to plan the rest of the day.
Then spent a few minutes buying a used book from the bookstore, after that we headed out.

After we left the Cal Tech campus we headed West on the freeway to downtown Los Angeles

approaching dowtown Los Angeles - we followed the 110

As we headed SW we saw a blimp flying overhead.
