Elwin Mittelstaedt was born on the family homestead in Fall River County, South Dakota - Near Oelrichs, SD.
Before 1920 the family farm went bankrupt and moved east to Hadar in northeastern Nebraska where other family members lived.
After some financial reversals, and the family business (a garage where Otto J. repaired cars) burned down the family moved to Sheboygan, Wisconsin.
Elwin married Marie. They lived for many years in a northwestern suburb of Chicago, Illinois.
Elwin served in World War II - After the war he worked in heavy industry.
He also served several years as a city councilman in the town where he lived in Illinois.
After he retired he moved to Phoenix, Arizona.
He was active in the LDS church in the latter half of his life.
