Marie Gehm was born 9 April 1892.
She married Otto J. Mittelstaedt in South Dakota on the homestead there, just south of the Black Hills.
Before 1920 the family farm went bankrupt and moved east to northeastern Nebraska where other family members lived. After some financial reversals, and the family business (a garage where Otto J. repaired cars) burned down the family moved to Sheboygan, Wisconsin. She worked in the Jung shoe factory in Sheboygan.
