As the political climate in Rhodesia in southern Africa worsened the Saunders family decides to leave. They purchased the Walkabout a 33 foot, 12 ton ketch, in neighboring Mozambique. They refitted it and sailed from South Africa to Rio de Janiero, Brazil, to Barbedos then St. Thomas and finally to Falmouth, England via the Azores.
