This book was written by a person retired from the US CIA. He wondered if the CIA had any files on Ernest Hemingway, and found that yes, they did. Reynolds identified many other sources and wrote this book on Hemingways life from 1935 when he became involved in the Spanish Civil War, his life in Cuba, his involvement touring China, then doing spy work for the USA in Cuba, then anti submarine patrol off Cuba, followed by his involvement in WWII in Europe. After that his living in Cuba, the Cuban revolution, the aftermath and his decline, hospitalization and suicide.
Hemingway became a violent antifacist during the Spaish Civil War.
I have read other biographies if Ernest Hemingway, particularly A.E. Hotchners Papa Hemingway That was a decent biogarphy. Nicholas Reynolds book shows another side, and does it much greater detail. To understand the man, read both books.
