This is the definitive work on the sailboat design commonly called the sharpie. This sort of boat may be defined as a mostly flat bottomed sailboat with one or 2 masts, often but not always rigged without a jib and with overall length between 14 feet and 50 feet long. They are centerboarders and with board up have very shallow draft.
Chapter 1 - History and Evolution ~ from the earliest workboats, many used for oyster tonging to boats used to deliver the mail.
Chapter 2 - Traditional Construction ~ How these were built in traditional manner
Chapter 3 - Tools, Materials, Adhesives, Fasteners and Safety ~ What is needed to build a boat.
Chapter 4 - Modern Construction ~ Using modern tools and techniques how to build a boat.
Chapter 5 - Details and accoutrements ~ Rudders, centerboards, hatches, masts etc.
Chapter 6 - Designs, Lofting, and Scantlings ~ 16 shapries are described in enough detail to actually build, the smallest is 14 ft long and the largest is 38 ft long. Each has a general description, line diagrams, construction notes which include the types and modern lumber sizes recommended.
Chapter 7 - Sailing, Handling, and Maintenance ~ Some sound advice on successfully sailing these fast and sometimes lively boats which do not handle the same way heavier and deeper boats handle.
Appendices as listed above
This is an excellent book to learn about this particularly American boat type, and a very sensible book to read about the details of boat building in general - highly recommended. In some chapters about actual building one needs to read slowly and carefully - The historical chapters are delightful.
