This is a good murder mystery set in a private research library in Washington, DC. The draw in this one is in its setting and how it plays in the plot. This library contains more than its share in manuscripts and early first editions, with separate deparments as well as facilities for repair of same.
The people are as varied as the colection with their own layers of specialists and their varied world view. This is a good book to enjoy a mystery as well as learn a little of the world of old and/or rare books and that part of the book trade.
This book uses a fair amount of dialog and as such peoples names get used as they might be in conversation. While it is not as involved as a Russian novel, I found it usefull to make a list of the dramatus personae (cast of characters) so I coud keep them straight, related to their position in the library and the plot. This list by both last name as well as first name is presented below.
Do remember, this is a book of fiction, originally published in 1977.
While some research libraries may be like the fictional Werner-Bok, that library is totally fictional.
