Easter Vigil Fire at Holy Spirit Parish

McAllen, Texas
3 April 2010

For some years members of Troop and Crew 583 have lit and cared for
the Easter Vigil fire for the church ceremony that evening.
This year it was overcast, humid and we had a mild wind from the North
all important elements to guide outdoor fire building.
We did not need a canopy this year, although it was overcast it did not rain.

The group participating. Most of the Troop and Crew who were in town for the holiday.

Driving in a stake - setting up a rope perimeter for safety.

The Crew and Scouts set up a perimeter inside the rope for safety.

The Fire is lit and blessed.

The Paschal Candle gets lit. No eyebrows were singed.
Danny is ready with the globe to keep it from blowing out.

The fire is first smothered out by putting the lid on the cooker
and closing all dampers, then dowsed with water.

The cooker is removed and the fire pit is clean for next year.

The fire is made of split bits of old very dry cedar fence, which seems eager to burn.
We got a fair supply of dry cedar fence some years ago,
enough for several years of Easter eve fires.
