Early Maritime Law


Law of Oleron - text . This was codified in Oleron, an island on the Atlantic coast of France in 1152 AD. It was adopted by Elinor of Aquitaine as general maritime law in 1190 and was first printed in 1494 AD.

Barcelona Maritime Law - text Promulgated by James I of Aragon in 1258 AD.

Rhodian Law of the Sea - text     Byzantine era

Ancient Maritime Law of Rhodes . This text, as much as it is known, is much older (circa 800 BC) than the later Byzantine law (about 800 AD.)

Other early codifications of maritime law include: the Code for Sea Consuls, those from Amalfi (Italy) and Visby (Northern Europe) and of the Hansa league.
